“Danger! Will Robinson.” They had me with that line…immediately. Right away I knew I had to watch the Netflix series Lost In Space.

I was part of the “cult following” that occurred when the original series came out in the mid 1960’s when I was very young. I was totally hooked on the series because it was science fiction with children as main characters. It was about the Robinson family who was actually … lost in space. It had many aspects that attracted me. The mom, June Lockhart, was the mother from the old Lassie series. The oldest child was named “Judy” (like me) and she happened to be very pretty. The middle child, Penny, was an actor from my favorite movie, The Sound of Music. Then of course I was in love with Will Robinson, the youngest child, who was incredibly cool because he had his own robot. Will’s robot did not use simple words like “yes” and “no,’ instead, it (he?) used real official science words like “affirmative” and “negative.”  I was spell-bound … until after three years and at the mature age of of ten, I out-grew Will and decided that the robot’s wavy arms were silly.

However, when I heard about this re-make of Lost In Space by Netflix, I knew I would have to watch…and I did. I actually had to “binge watch” the series.

Now I want to decide if people who are not familiar with the original series will like it. AND I believe the answer is yes. There is plenty of adventure and family drama. Also, there is interesting conflict, narrow escapes, and wonderful science fiction/fantasy. Then, there is the robot. This time I am in love with the robot. He is the strong silent type, a little bad, so misunderstood, and just wants to belong (the last part should be said in a dramatic voice).

Also, the characters are much more interesting. The mom is heavily involved in the science that makes a space journey possible. And, in this series the three Robinson children are very integral to the mission and are much more “fleshed out” than in the original series. Dr. Smith was always a character I loved to hate, but in this series Dr. Smith is now a woman who is very dark and interesting. Then, Netflix spent some major change on creating some wonderful scenes while making the settings. Then, the science stuff such as the space ship and the “chariot” is…..WOW! Oh, and guess what … Will Robinson is still in danger.

If you like science fiction and a show that the whole family can watch together, you will like this series. I am looking forward to season two.
