“She could be a fire hazard. Maybe we should remove her from the ship before she spontaneously combusts.”
I put this book on my “hold” list from my local library because I saw it was written by author Marissa Meyer. However, I did not realize that it is a graphic novel. Also, because I was looking at a very small picture on my library app, I did not notice the small print under the title that says, “The Lunar Chronicles series.” Then, I had to wait a very long time behind a long list of other people wanting the book before it became available, so I was expecting something spectacular.
I will not say it was spectacular, but I did enjoy it and if you read the Lunar Chronicles you will want to read this.
First, before you decide to read this book, you must MUST read The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer because Wires and Nerve takes place after this series. The Lunar Chronicles including Cinder (Cinderella), Scarlett (Red Riding Hood), and Cress (Rapunzel), is an incredible series. I liked it so much I actually read it twice.
You could read this graphic novel on its own, but it will not have very much of an impact unless you read the series first and you will not be sorry you did.
Synopsis:
In this new story, Iko is the main character. Cinder and her gang are minor characters but pop up all through the book. Iko is helping Lunar Queen Cinder with the problematic wolf-hybrid soldiers that still are on Earth after Lavana’s rein of terror. These wolf soldiers are angry and causing problems between Luna and Earth. Iko's tireless quest is to gather up these soldiers to bring them back to Luna for trial and/or rehabilitation. However, some of the soldiers are angry, smart, and ruthlessly seeking revenge for Lavana’s treatment. Also, since Queen Lavana is gone, they are turning their hatred toward Cinder.
A Side Note:
Wires and Nerve is the story of Iko. Iko is the robot friend of Cinder, and she goes through an incredible amount of change in the original series. Her “personality chip” is housed in several bodies. But, she finally gets the body she wants which is that of a beautiful human woman. If you have read The Lunar Chronicles you know that Iko is a pivotal character in the series, but is never given much credit for her contributions because she is a “machine.” However, in the last book, she and Cinder share a moment that reveals the true and tender friendship between them. I loved that scene and thought it would be wonderful if everyone had a friend like Iko.
My thoughts on this book:
Iko has two problems. One is the wolf-hybrid soldiers, and the other is that she wants to be human. She is loyal, has human emotions/feelings, and she can think on her feet. But, technically she a machine. She knows she has true friends who love her, but others only see her as non-human. To make matters worse, she seems to be falling in love with one of these humans. Then, we catch a glimpse in the book that there is something special about Iko, and this information is buried in a file but we have to wait until Volume two to find out what.
VOLUME TWO??? I have got to remember to always look for this when I start a new book. I did not realize this book has a sequel until I was almost through … This has happened to me before. Now I have to read volume two AND it just came out on November 7, 2017 AND it will be a long time before the library gets it so I have to wait or buy it. The good news is.....it is out.
So, to sum up. Read The Lunar Chronicles, then read this book. It is a graphic novel and it is a little difficult to read on a device because you will want/need to enlarge the pictures to get the full experience and sometimes that can be confusing/annoying. But this book is total fun. I enjoyed it even though I rarely read graphic novels.
