The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Review

Title: The 5th Wave
Length:  474 pages
Author Rick Yancey
Content note: Frightening setting and plot

“We'd stared into the face of Death, and Death blinked first. You'd think that would make us feel brave and invincible. It didn't.”

This is the first book in a 3 book series. I loved the action and the main character "Cassie" (short for Cassiopeia). Cassie is smart, funny, and strong even though she was once an easy-to-forget average high school student who had a secret crush (as usual for nondescript girls like Cassie) on a high school cute guy named Ben Parish. Ben, Cassie, and Cassie’s little brother Sammie survive separation, desperation, and harrowing twists and turns that create more questions than answers. Then there is Evan. You just will have to read to find out about him, but I will say that he is a big question mark in Cassie’s frightening story.

The plot kept me guessing. The book is a little dark, and maybe a little scary for younger audiences. But, I really like this kind of survivor story and I never got bored. It seems that our Earth is under alien attacks that come in "waves," and there is nothing the Earthlings can do. Everyone is helpless, bewildered, and powerless in each different wave of destruction. Cassie says that we got it all wrong in our War of the Worlds-like stories with plucky heroes that figure out what the aliens are up to and make a plan. At one point Cassie is afraid that she is the last human left on Earth. Of course she finds others, but she soon becomes very confused about who she can trust. Then to make things worse, Cassie has questions about who the the enemy actually is. Her father once told her that she would know the enemy because they will be the ones shooting at you, but that is not always the case as this story becomes more complicated. I have read all three of the books in this series and I could not wait to read each next book, but like I said I love survival stories.
